Tips for organising your Practice Models

Checking if your models are suitable

Models must be over the age of 15 years and have parent consent form signed if under the age of 18 years.  Models must not be pregnant or have any known allergies to the services being performed.  We do ask that models come alone with no children in tow.

It’s recommended to go through the consultation form above with your model and check with us if you have any concerns prior to training. On page 2 and 3 of the Training Model Consultation & Consent Forms, there are sections on General Health and Conditions.

  • Go through the questions in these sections with your models before you start your course to avoid potential issues on the day.
  • You can go through the questions with them in person or by phone if that is easier.
  • If your model answers YES to any of the questions on the form, its probably best to find another model.  If you’re not 100% sure about their answers, you can give us a quick call on 1300 113 996 to check.

IMPORTANT NOTE: When choosing a model, keep in mind they will be laid flat with their eyes closed for up to 3.5 hours, depending on your course. Make sure they have no back problems or health issues preventing this.

Whether you are studying online or in the Academy, you will need to practice on different models over the course of your training program.

The number of models will vary depending on your course. You can find out how many models you need to organise for your course in the Model Requirements, Agenda & Assessments section on the Future Students page.

We ask you to organise your own models for a few reasons:

  1. Your first few practice sessions you may feel more comfortable working on someone you know (sister, friends, mum, aunty, partner)
  2. It gives you the chance to put yourself out there and tell the world you are training for a new skill/ starting a new business or job/ adding a new service to your treatment menu.  You might want to do a model call on your social media account or in local buy & sell pages (if allowed). Just be clear that you are currently training.
  3. It’s possible your practice models could turn into clients and ongoing income once you are qualified. Its a good idea to start working on potential client relationships as early as possible.

For practice models in Academy training courses: we use a Training Model Consultation & Consent Form to help you understand what your client is looking for.

For practice models in Online training courses: we use a Client Consultation & Consent Form to help you understand what your client is looking for.

The difference between the two forms is the Training model version has a Patch Test waiver section.  Patch tests are not required for initial student models on our Academy premises only.

You can download Consultation and Consent Forms from the Downloads section on this page.

Tips Checklist

  1. Models must not be pregnant and unfortunately cannot bring children or a friend with them for duty of care reasons.
  2. Ask your model to come with no makeup and no lash extensions and dressed for comfort.
  3. Make sure your model knows what time they need to arrive for your practice session and how long it will take.
  4. Practice models are free services and supervised in the Academy.  The model does not pay for her treatment.
  5. Your model needs to have realistic expectations of your skill level and the time their appointment will take.  You don’t want your model leaving to pick up the kids or run off to a meeting half way through!
  6. NEVER represent yourself as qualified before you receive your certification!

Setting up for case studies and study at home online

A real (or fake!) workplace for lash & brow courses

Whether you are employed in an existing workplace or training for a future role, your case studies must be demonstrated in a beauty industry environment for our lash and brow courses.

This can be a beauty industry workplace, our Student Salon Clinic or you can set up your own workstation using the required tools and equipment to simulate a beauty workplace (this can be in your home).

You can use paying clients (both new and regular), or models who have the  expectation that the services reflect those of a commercial business.

You may take longer to perform the service as you are building your skills and speed, but the end result should be commercially acceptable.

What you need

  • Treatment table (beauty bed or massage table) with safe working access at both ends and sides
  • Individual electricity supply (power point)
  • Lamp
  • Chair or stool
  • Trolley for products, bowls and equipment

For your work to be assessed, you must also have access to:

  • Products and equipment required to perform the service
  • hand washing facilities:
    • basin
    • hot and cold running water
    • liquid soap
    • single use towels or hand dryer
  • relevant workplace documentation:
    • blank client records
    • organisational policies and procedures relevant to the service
    • equipment instructions
    • manufacturer instructions and safety data sheets

Before you start

If you are completing your case studies in the workplace or a home salon (or simulated salon), you must complete an Environment Confirmation Checklist and submit photographs of your work area and handwashing facilities to demonstrate the appropriate assessment conditions are met.

You will find these details in your workbook and your trainer will go through it with you once your course commences.

Using a real or simulated beauty workplace allows you to:

  • practice providing the services within commercially realistic speed, timing and productivity
  • demonstrate competency in an environment with real work situations
  • manage tasks and contingencies in the context of the job role.

If you are just starting out and need help with recommendations for equipment and product purchases for your salon setup, please call us at the Academy on 1300 113 996.
